Electrolytes are present in the human body, and the balance of the electrolytes in our bodies is essential for normal function of our cells and our organs. Electrolytes in our body are composed of minerals, and the most important are calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium chloride, hydrogen phosphate and hydrogen carbonate. What can cause electrolyte imbalance? High temperatures when we sweat a lot, intense physical training, prolonged diarrhea, high temperature sickness, dangerous infectious diseases (dysentery, cholera).

For example, if you only drink water during intensive training or high temperatures and you don’t take electrolytes in some other way, that can cause electrolyte imbalance. So, whatever the reason for the lack of electrolytes, they must be compensated.

Too few electrolytes in our body can cause some serious trouble. However, there are natural drinks that can compensate the lack of electrolytes, and some of them you can make by yourself.

The basic formula for a good electrolyte drink is very simple:

  • water
  • 6-8% carbohydrate
  • 300-700 mg sodium per liter
  • flavor

You will need:

  • ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 1 lemon juice
  • 2 cups of water (or pure coconut water)
  • 2 teaspoons of honey
  • 1/8 teaspoon Himalayan salt

Instruction:

Mix all the ingredients and wait until honey is completely dissolved. Keep the drink in the fridge. You can drink it during the illness, after workouts, or any other occasion when you need to compensate electrolytes.

  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • 3-4 fresh basil leaves

Instructions:

Put all ingredients in a shaker and shake well. You can drink it during and after workouts, during the illness or any other occasion when you need to compensate electrolytes.

Himalayan salt: unlike ordinary salt, which is pure sodium chloride, Himalayan salt contains over 80 different minerals. It is quite clear why this is a good ingredient.

Lemon and orange: contain various electrolytes in their natural form, especially potassium. They are also rich in vitamin C, which makes this homemade drink even more useful.

Honey: contains natural enzymes and minerals. Provides energy for your body, and has antibiotic properties.

Coconut water: its composition is very similar to human blood plasma.

By making your own homemade electrolyte drink, you will have a different taste every time and no training will be boring. You don’t have to worry that you will lose the necessary minerals and fluid because you will always have your homemade workout drink with you. In addition, this option is much cheaper and you will save a few bucks after only a couple of workouts!
