Pets can lower risk of depression

Elderly people who own pets rarely suffer from depression, unlike those who don’t have them, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Geriatric Association. Cindy Adams, a professor of Ontario Veterinary College and a specialist in animal/human connection, believes that the positive effects of owning a pet originate from the fact that they are driving people to focus on something else and not on themselves. “They distract our minds from our own problems, illness, pain, etc.,” says Prof. Adams.

Good for the respiratory system of children

According to research published in the journal Pediatrics, if you want your baby to be healthy, get a furry pet! Specifically, they “protect against respiratory tract infections during the first year of a baby’s life, and have strong effect on better resistance to infections later in childhood,”. And that’s not all.

Babies who are in contact with dogs rarely have inflammation or infection of the ears and they take less antibiotics while growing up (compared to babies who have no dealings with the pets).

Improve condition

A study published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health revealed that dog owners are 34 percent more active than those who do not have pets. Here’s more proof of how man’s best friend affects the fitness and health of its owner:

* Research University of Western Australia revealed that people who own a dog weekly walk about 30 minutes more than those who do not.

* Teens who have a dog are 32 minutes more physically active during the day, according to a study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.

* University of Guelph’s one year research has revealed that pets have positive effects on the physical health of people older than 65 years.

* When people who don’t have a dog joined the program for dog walking, they lost 6,5kg for a year, the scientists of the University of Missouri-Columbia concluded.

Reduce stress and tension

Pet owners have lower pressure and less stress hormones in their blood. The presence of a pet is more efficient than the presence of a friend or spouse when it comes to mitigating the effects of stress and their effect on the heart. Pets encourage confidence of their owner and help them to turn their thoughts out of their own needs and problems. Older pet owners have fewer health problems and rarely go to the doctor.
