Each year, global organization Environmental Working Group (EWG) publishes a list of vegetables and fruits that contain maximum and minimum amount of pesticides.
When it comes to pesticides, apples have been at the top of this notorious list for last fifty years, because they are usually sprayed before and after the harvest to remain fresh as long as possible.
Avocado has been at the top of the healthiest foods list for the second year in a row, because there is only one percent of pesticides found in this fruit.
An average off-season bell pepper contains even 15 different kinds of pesticides, while cherry tomato, nectarine, peach, apple and peas contain about 13 different types of pesticides.
List of “most sprayed” fruits and vegetables:
8. Bell pepper
10. Cherry tomatoes
List of “the healthiest” fruits and vegetables:
5. Peas (frozen)
15. Sweet Potatoes
According to these lists, we conclude that the safest foods are those that grow in tropical regions and not the ones grown in greenhouses, without proper climate.
We need to avoid all the off-season foods we usually buy, as well as forget about stuffed peppers and fresh tomato or cucumber salads during the winter.
