You will learn why the apple is for me just an ideal winter fruit, or why I always pick apples over oranges. We will consider also whether ,,apple a day keeps the doctor away” is a true old saying.
So let’s get started. As I said, apple is one of my favorite fruits, but it has not always been the case. In my early teens, the situation was completely different. My parents claimed that apple is extremely healthy and therefore I should eat it on every occasion. I did not think much about health at the time, and the apple was too ordinary to be interesting to me. Juicy tropical fruits were exotic, tastier and more attractive. But over time, things have changed.
I agree with the attitude of Chinese traditional medicine, which says that in the winter times we should avoid citrus fruits because they cool the body. In my case, this turned out to be true. And before I knew this old fact my body was clear enough to realize that.
This, of course, doesn’t mean that I do not eat it. Sometimes and in limited quantities yes, but not a kilo of oranges a day. Something common for all of us is that during winter we eat large amounts of citrus fruit. I understand this is due to vitamin C. But if you are looking for vitamin C, sauerkraut and rosehip are much better choice than citrus fruit. Therefore, when it comes to fruit I give preference to local – good old apple.
let’s talk a little bit about the saying that I mentioned earlier. Today’s science confirms its accuracy and here’s why. Apple is primarily a good source of fiber, both soluble and insoluble. These fibers act preventively against the occurrence of many diseases. In the apples there is mostly pectin and cellulose. Pectin is a soluble vegetable fiber that primarily affects the absorption in the stomach and small intestine. In this way, it reduces the absorption of fat, cholesterol and blood sugar after a meal. In addition, pectin binds toxins and heavy metals which are then ejected from the body.
Many studies show that apple a day reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
On the other hand, cellulose is a source of insoluble fiber and it regulates digestion and stabilizes the intestinal flora. Considering that it contains both types of fiber apple is useful to stop diarrhea.
Apple is known as a good teeth cleaner. Cellulose fibers remove particles of food that are stuck in the teeth and simultaneously perform massage and strengthen the gums.
A high percentage of water or the presence of citric acid and malic reveals refreshing properties of the apple. Fructose and glucose are a wondrous source of energy. Apple is useful for mental and physical fatigue because it quickly refreshes and restores energy. Eat an apple after long work on the computer and you will see how it will help you regain energy.
Apple contains vitamins C, A, K, B1, B6, and minerals such as K, Ca, Mg, P, and Fe. There are also polyphenols, substances that act as powerful antioxidants. Most of these beneficial ingredients are found in the apple skin and therefore it is best to eat the whole apple, rather than peeled. But there is one problem that can ruin this idyllic story. Apples belong to the group of fruits that are most sprayed, according to some sources even over 20 times in the season. Therefore, you should buy unsprayed apples or apples from organic production, otherwise be sure to peel them! I do not know what is your opinion on the issue of organic products. I say this because I know there are those for which the purchase of these products is a purely waste of money because, allegedly, there is no evidence that organically grown food is superior over the conventional. I’m not going to spend much time on this topic (maybe some other time) but my recommendation is to pay attention when buying fruit. Choose strong, healthy, undamaged fruit without impact marks. Avoid those polished, proper shaped, without any freckles that look more like plastic variants. That “perfect” apple is similar to the one that evil witch gave to Snow White to eat, so you shouldn’t eat it.
Given the fact that apple is one of the first fruit given to babies, these recommendations should certainly be taken into account. The magazine Life & Health cited the results of European research “Parsifal” in which they examined 14 000 children who had consumed organic food. It was found that these children had 30% lower incidence of allergies and eczema compared to children who ate conventionally grown products.
Like other fruits, apples should be eaten on an empty stomach to avoid gases and bloating. It is best to have one between meals as a simple snack. One medium-sized apple of 150 g represents one portion. People with sensitive stomachs should be eating baked apples because they are easily digested.
I cannot imagine fall or winter without baked apples. Apple and cinnamon, just the perfect combination! There is no better way to sweeten your day. If you want something that is even richer, scoop out the apples and fill them with a mixture of ground walnuts and raisins. Of course, you can choose any other combination of your choice – compote maybe? You have already forgotten about it? These are just some of the ways that you can use apples. They are excellent in every version.
